Unit 4 Math Vocabulary

1. Tell why you think it is important to be able to divide numbers. For what kind of problems do you need to use division? It's important to be able to divide numbers because suppose you have a party and you have 50 treat's and there are 10 children attending the party? A quick and easy way to divide them equally would be 50/10=5. That mean's 5 treats are given to each of the 10 children.

2. Tell what part of this unit was the most difficult for you and why. Describe what you did to overcome any difficulties you had. Dividing decimals would have to be one of the hardest because at first I didn't get it and then when I kept practicing It was very easy. I kept practicing at home and I got it.

The Parable of the Sower

Jesus went outside in a boat in a lake. People crowded around the beach watching him. He told them, "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed , some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop-a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear." People were confused and the disciples asked him why he spoke to people in parables. So Jesus explained what he was trying to say. The first type of seed is like a person who hears the message but does not understand it. The second type of seed is like a man who hears the message and understands it but only lasts a short time since he has no root. The third type of seed is like the man who hears the message but worries because of other things in life. Lastly, the fourth type of seed is like the man who hears the message and understands it.

The people learned that it was not their job to judge whether to listen to God or not.
I learned in my life that I should always listen to god no matter what so I can have faith and so I can grow strong.

Writing Reflection

Writing Self Assessment

1. What do I notice about myself as a writer as I read through my work?

I see spelling errors and sometimes my sentences don't make sense. There are a lot of times when I write sentences without sentence fluency so It sounds like I keep pausing abruptly. I try to make my writing sound like it's real: what I would really feel and what I would be thinking and a lot of times it sounds good.

2. How have I changed as a writer so far?

Now I really try to make my writing interesting so the reader doesn't fall asleep and also I try to make it unique. Not just about a birthday party but a real experience. I think I've improved tremendously than before. See, I even use big words now. I add a lot of detail in my writing because I want the reader to know what I'm talking about.

3. What are three things I do well as a writer?

1. I add a lot of detail in my writing.

2. I try to make the reader feel like he/she is in the story

3. I try to make the reader paint a picture in their mind

4. What are some things I want to get stronger at as a writer?

Sentence fluency is one thing. The other is making my writing make sense and the story should REALLY grab your attention. I keep using the word ''I'' a lot and it's a bad habit. I also want to make the beginning of some sentences in a different way.

5. What is my favorite piece, and what are the things I love about it?

I think my favorite piece would be... hmmm, I don't really have a favorite but I can tell you about a writing piece that I think I really like. I wrote this at home. It's called "Basic Stuff". The things I really liked about it was I expressed my own feelings and I used really good words. I liked the plot of my story because I thought it was really interesting.

Math Unit

Describe what you liked about playing the game Factor Captor.

I think Factor Captor is a neat way of learning the multiples of a number. I helps you learn about some numbers that you never knew had multiples as well as having fun. What I liked about this game was that I learned numbers that had more than two multiples (1 and itself) like fifty-one. It's also a very fun game to play if you want to know the multiples of different numbers.

Explain how making an array might help someone find factors of a number a number.

Suppose you want to know 2 factors of fifty-one. Draw fifty-one circles in rows and columns. You could end up with three rows and seventeen columns (visa versa) or one row and fifty-one columns. Making an array can help.

Look back through journal pages 2-28. What activity or lesson did you enjoy most in this unit and what did you learn from it?

I liked the square numbers. I loved squaring and square rooting numbers. This was a lesson I never knew about. So I learned quite a few things in this unit. This unit was also very fun.

Math is a subject that I'm okay on. Sometimes I'm really good at it and other times it's just so confusing to me. Over the past few weeks in 5th grade I'm liking math. The first unit was pretty easy and fun for me which is why I enjoyed it. Other times in math, I find it challenging, hard and boring. I'm not the type of person who is ALWAYS excited when it's math time. One of the ways I like learning math is on the smart board. It's cool writing on the smart board and I feel that I really understand what I'm learning. I also like playing math games because I learn as well as having fun. Sometimes, I even like it when it's just completely silent while I'm jotting down answers and explanations. Last year I was in the Math Olympiad and I found it very challenging and sometimes even boring. I had to practice Math Olympiad at home as well as all the other homework I had. I didn't really feel like I learned that much when I did the Math Olympiad tests because I usually didn't get good marks and It was so hard to understand. I like the Everyday Math system because they make you understand what your doing. I like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. I also like symmetry. I think that my learning in math is improving more and more.
